|The first aspect you notice about Five Pawns’ e-juice is that they have their branding and packaging down excellently; it’s unlike any other e-juice brand that I have come across. Even before tasting the liquids, you can’t help but to expect that whatever is hidden within the beautifully rustic yet classy-looking tube is something that is made with care, precision, and dedication; a feel that is echoed in the entire experience of using this product.|
Whereas other e-juices may try to make their labeling appear as modern or flashy as possible, Five Pawns appears and feels more reminiscent of something like a bottle of aged scotch; nothing flashy, just easy on the eyes with a well-orchestrated simplicity about it.
Who Are They?
The “Five Pawns” name hails from the similarities in appearance between the chess piece called the “pawn” and drip tips/e-juice bottles. The pawn is a piece that is to be sacrificed or used at your leisure, just as their juices are meant to be. Their goal is to provide a quality piece in your vaping lifestyle, and I believe they have succeeded. These fine folks are dedicated to bringing your vape experience to a higher echelon of sophistication and pleasure.
What They Have
In terms of variety, Five Pawns offers a reasonable selection of five staple flavors at a time with each flavor’s name relating to the game of chess: Queenside, Bowden’s Mate, Grandmaster, Gambit, and (my personal favorite) Absolute Pin. Fewer flavors would seem cruel, but more than the five flavors would detract from the feeling of exclusiveness that you get. So many other juices seem to want to brag about how many flavors they have, swamping you with dozens of mediocre choices. These guys make it easy on you.
Each of these five flavors is meant to correspond to one of the five taste perceptions for humans: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami (described as savory). However, each of these accomplishes this in a manner where no single taste is overwhelming, and the complexity is enjoyably balanced.
And then there is the Castle Long Reserve line of juice that they will be releasing soon. This is a special blend of toasted coconut, roasted almond, French Vanilla, real vanilla bean, Kentucky bourbon, and natural oak. Each product will have been steeped in oak barrels for about three weeks before being bottled and shipped to an exclusive 24 retail stores (SmokeFreeSource being one of them).
What Are You Getting?
Every 30mL bottle (in both their standard and reserve line) has an inscription denoting what number it was in the batch (adding to that aged scotch feel I mentioned) and which one it comes from. The amount of bottles in the batch varies; the one’s I have range from 200-300 bottles per batch, and the reserve is about 67 bottles per barrel. For making the products, they use only USP/food grade ingredients and the finest quality pharmaceutical grade nicotine. The blends are all 50%VG/50%PG, and all flavors are extracted from the related base ingredients. All the components are locally sourced and their liquids are all produced in California, USA. As the production of e-juice is still unregulated, it is reassuring to find a creator of e-juices who is dedicated to offering a premium liquid infused with quality ingredients.
When you taste the juices, you find that their efforts for perfection and patience in crafting their juices have absolutely paid off. Five Pawns e-juices all come pre-steeped and don’t make it to store shelves until the creator has approved the maturity of the batch. Each option has a distinct and complex flavor and the vapor produced is always smooth as a baby’s butt. It’s all balanced and there is not any single overwhelming taste that suppresses the more subtle notes in the blends; everything hits with a rounded feel to it, no sharpness whatsoever. I can get some really fluffy vapor clouds with this stuff too even using just an eGo 1000mAh, and it smells delightful. I can’t even begin to describe the experience of using a rebuildable atomizer with these flavors. Unparalleled.
And the Verdict Is…
But, this stuff is not quite for everyday vaping. I mean, it’s not out of the question, but I’d probably prefer refraining from too much usage simply to keep the flavors special, as something to indulge in from time to time, much like dessert. But, if you can’t resist, feel free to partake of the pawns daily.
I know this review has been praise after praise, so here arrives my single critique. Since the bottles are only available in 30mL and, being a premium e-juice, are priced higher than others, these could prove to be obstacles to trying this product. Were they to offer smaller bottles, purchasing their product would be a little less intimidating. Dropping about $30 for a bottle is a bit of a commitment for some and one might shy away from a new investment in order to refill on a trusted familiar e-juice.
